What does it mean to be Cretan? There is no question that Cretans are a very special breed. They come bearing an energy and flow that isn't something you can describe but needs to be experienced, and they ALWAYS identify themselves as Cretans before they say they are Greek. Lifelong revolutionaries, they are at once rough and serene, singing songs that stir them and shoot guns in the air to express their joy. They are Greece's most notable gun gang, yet routinely ignore National laws and crave traditions. We love driving up into the Cretan mountains, where you are slowed by mobs of wild sheep. To discovering the soul of Crete beyond major tourist centres, you have to venture off the island's villages for our best shots. We always find loud, informal males (sometimes females too) clinking glasses for treating us "the strangers" as honoured guests.

Αν και γίνεσαι φίλος από τη μία ρακή στην άλλη, η αλήθεια είναι ότι οι Κρητικοί είναι δύσκολοι άνθρωποι. Στις συνειδήσεις τους, στους τοπικούς κώδικες αξιών και τα λοιπά. Γι' αυτό πιες τη ρακή μονομιάς και μην παραπονεθείς. Οι άνθρωποι εκεί, αφού περνούν ώρες ακίνητοι και αμίλητοι, παίρνουν ξάφνου τους κατσικόδρομους και ο καθένας έχει διάλογο με κάποιον, ενώ βαδίζει μόνος. Είναι ένας τόπος όπου οι άνθρωποι κρύβουν ό,τι κρύβουν με πολύ εύγλωττο  τρόπο, συνεννοούνται με τα λόγια που λείπουν από τις φράσεις τους κι όσο σημαντικότερο το θέμα, εδώ τα λένε «οικογενειακά», τόσο λιγότερα τα λόγια. Είναι ένας τόπος με χιούμορ και αυτοσαρκασμό σε μεγαλύτερες δόσεις από οπουδήποτε αλλού για να αντέχονται οι αγριάδες του βουνού και τα παλιά αίματα.
