Bridges
Robert Moses, the road builder, understood that bridges are monuments and create glory for those that find the resources to build them, there in the sky, for all to see, changing the landscape.
“Bygone pieces of stone made by deft craftsmen, linked with local legends and God-fearing offerings, and as a result turned into folklore songs and heritage ... these cement or metal slabs, nowadays, unify the hamlets of the past with the modern metropolises, outliving any earth barriers, uniting county by county, and diminishing the distances inbetween.”
From the floating Agios Achillios bridge (Prespes), to the stone bridge of Agios Vissarionas in Meteora (Pyli, Trikala region), the tiny arch in Chaliki (Aspropotamos), the high bridge of Chalkida, the Rio-Antirrio bridge, the stone bridge of Sarakina (near Meteora), the metal hanging bridge of Tzoumerka and the Preveli stone bridge (Rethymno, Crete)...to the Bishop's Jordan bridge (Poznan, Poland). A series of glorious constructions, small wonders and works of people who managed to tame Nature.
